Hello friends!
In 2026, it is easier than ever to spend money. We don’t even have to count paper cash anymore. We just take our card or our phone, tap it on the machine, and—beep—the money is gone.
Because it is so fast and easy, we often buy things without really thinking. We buy a snack because we are bored. We buy a new shirt because it is on sale. We buy a gadget because we saw a cool video of it online.
But often, a week later, that thing is sitting in a corner, and we are not even using it. The money is gone, but we aren't any happier.
Today, I want to give you a very simple tool to stop this. It is a question you should ask yourself every single time before you tap your card: "Does this thing really bring me joy?"
Why "Joy" is Different from "Want"
There is a big difference between wanting something and finding joy in it.
Wanting is a fast feeling. It is like an itch you want to scratch. You see a candy bar, you want it, you eat it, and then it is gone.
Joy is a slow, deep feeling. It is something that makes your life better for a long time.
Arnold Schwarzenegger has a newsletter.
Yeah. That Arnold Schwarzenegger.
So do Codie Sanchez, Scott Galloway, Colin & Samir, Shaan Puri, and Jay Shetty. And none of them are doing it for fun. They're doing it because a list you own compounds in ways that social media never will.

If you are about to buy a new pair of shoes, ask the question. If you think, "These shoes will help me walk in the park with my dog and they make my feet feel great," that is joy.
But if you think, "I just want them because they look shiny in the store," that is just a "want." Most of the time, "wants" don't make us happy for very long.
The 5-Second Pause
The "tap" is so fast that we don't have time to think. To fix this, you have to create a pause.
Before you reach for your card, count to five.
1... 2... 3... 4... 5.
In those five seconds, look at the item in your hand. Imagine yourself one week from now. Are you still using it? Does it make your life easier? Does it make you smile?
If the answer is "No" or "I’m not sure," put it back. You aren't "losing" an item; you are "winning" your money back!
The "Joy Test" in Real Life
The Item | Does it bring joy? | The Result |
A third cup of coffee. | "No, I'm just bored." | Save the money. |
A gift for a friend. | "Yes, I love seeing them smile." | Buy it! |
A cheap toy that breaks. | "No, it will be trash tomorrow." | Put it back. |
Good food for dinner. | "Yes, it keeps my family healthy." | Buy it! |
You are the Boss of Your Money
Every time you say "no" to something that doesn't bring you joy, you are saying "yes" to your future. You are keeping your money for the things that really matter—like your home, your health, or a special trip with your family.
Real wealth is not about having a house full of stuff you don't use. It is about having a life full of things and people that make you happy.
Next time you are at the store, be a "Joy Detective." Only let the things that pass the test into your life. Your bank account—and your heart—will thank you!
Until next time, keep your spending smart and your heart happy.
